“Mek sure you reach home before the street lights turn on!”
If you grew up in the Caribbean, you’ve definitely heard this one before. It was a gentle yet firm reminder that around 6 p.m., it was Home Time. This verbal and visual warning was our parents’ way of making sure we got home safe, especially back when calling children on a phone wasn’t an option.
This painting captures that in-between time when the day has ended, the neighborhood is quiet, and everyone is already inside. The sky has gone cloudy and dark, filled with the cool blues of evening, with just enough of that soft yellow glow from the streetlight and stars to reveal the outlines of palm trees swaying behind the yellow house roof.
It’s a scene that’s simple but full of feeling. It’s not about sharp details, but about the atmosphere and the familiar hush that settles over the neighborhood at dusk. For so many of us, this moment is deeply familiar. Ordinary, yes, but unforgettable.
